One of the best ways to do that is to bring the outdoors in. Don't worry...you don't need to have a green thumb to add greenery to your space. Today, there are a plethora of faux greenery options that not only look amazingly real, but require little to no maintenance. And for those seeking the challenge of keeping a plant alive, we got you covered too! Plants can serve as the perfect subtle accessory to bring the whole design home, or they can be dramatic enough to be the focal art in a room. Don't those beautiful leaves just draw your attention!

French Moderne Manor - Master Bedroom Design

Things are coming along nicely in our French Modern Parade Home in Highland, Utah. While the kitchen and living room are definitely major focal points in this home, we can't be more excited for the master bedroom! I mean come on...who doesn't dream about a luxurious french bedroom?! And this master bedroom is exactly that...the room of our dreams! We began with the idea of punctuating the vaulted ceiling with a sculptural chandelier and a canopy bed. You heard me right, A CANOPY BED. Our inner child is going crazy right now. We tucked a swoon-worthy velvet chaise at the end of the bed and an arm chair on either side surrounding the fireplace. Speaking of the fireplace, we can’t wait for you to see it. We have a custom stone surround that is out of this world. Here's a sneak peak at our sketches and design board for the room. Now you're dreaming about too, aren't you? You're welcome.

Crisp & Clean...for Spring of course!

Despite the freshly fallen layer of snow us Utahans had been lucky enough to escape all winter...spring is just around the corner! I am trying my best to disregard the recent drop in temperatures and focus on the new season soon approaching. With spring, the first thing that comes to mind is getting out those cleaning gloves and feather-dusters for some in depth spring cleaning. Most of us think that this is the best way to freshen up our living spaces. However, some readjusting of your décor might also be in order!

A great way to re-energize a space is to simplify. My home tends to fill up with all sorts of odds and ends during the holiday season leaving me eager to clear out the junk. Get rid of all of those un-needed accessories and objects taking up valuable space. This will leave you with a space that clears your mind and makes you feel more organized.

Bring those light colors back! Whites and brights are soon to be in season once again. Freshen up your space by lifting the color palette to a more invigorating scheme. I love how energetic light colors can feel. There is something about sun streaming through the windows bouncing off one light wall to another that makes it easier to get up in the morning.

And of course, nothing screams spring like a few fresh flowers and doses of greenery. You can literally bring the new season indoors for an added sense of clean.

You can really set the stage of your room and home with the perfect rug. Did you know our designers always begin their projects by selecting a rug? A rug can act as an anchor for the room, and from there every piece in your room, whether it be upholstery, art, pillows or accessories, can take a cue from the rug. Perhaps your rug is a safe, pattern-less neutral, creating a calm flow from piece to piece in the room.

Perhaps you will choose a rug that sports a bold pattern, with some unexpected color that adds a little humor to the room, acting as an under-foot surprise each time you enter. No matter what you choose for your rug, you can take cues from the rug’s coloring and design to create a cohesive story in your room.

 

My favorite rug in the store creates a cohesive setting, where the pillows and upholstery really reflect the organic browns, grays, ivories and greens in the rug. The colors and pattern of the rug are natural and organic and the texture of the silk and wool is soft and luxurious. It reminds me, in a way, of a Monet's water lily paintings! Why not put the star art piece of your room on the floor?

Pantone's Color of the Year - Marsala

By now you’ve probably heard that the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year is Marsala—and we couldn’t be more excited! The perfect addition to any interior, this color is rich and warm, reminiscent of summers in Italy. Named for the wine, Marsala is an earthy red-brown hue that is sophisticated and inviting. It’s strong on its own or can be paired with an array of different colors. Check out some of the ways the color of the year can be incorporated into interiors:

Use Marsala as a rich accent in a neutral space. Not only is it a beautiful tone for upholstery, but it’s the perfect base for a floral arrangement, piece of art, or in accessories.

To freshen up your space for spring, pair a dusty Marsala with a bright and bold hue like turquoise or indigo.

If you are feeling more daring, make a statement with Marsala drapery panels or a saturated rug.

A fun way to bring color into a space is with artwork. Art is the heartbeat of the room. It brings the room to life. Whether it is the scene or the color scheme that speaks to you, just choose something you love! A great trick is to use the colors in the artwork as accent colors in the room; this will make the space feel very cohesive. If you want to be a little less predictable, pull out the less obvious colors in the art - this will still make the room feel tied together without being too matchy.

French Moderne Manor - Living Room Design

We took special consideration when designing the living room because we knew it would set the tone for the rest of the home. This room needed to be the perfect blend of French and modern. Here’s the vision: imagine an elegant French fireplace in the palest hue, a fresh take on a traditional coffered ceiling, well-dressed columns lining the hall, sophisticated furniture silhouettes, and a 20 foot wall of windows flanked by the softest linen drapery panels. Sounds dreamy, right? We’re excited for you to see it in person.

Be Bold

As a person I am bold and unapologetic. I love the tense and slightly uncomfortable feelings of adrenaline and competition. I’ve always preferred oomph over subtlety. And my professional design life is no different. I find myself drawn to bold artwork, saturated intense colors in fabric and drama created by mixing things that feel collected and loved – impulse buys. These things make a statement. They are sure of their place in the room where they live, and you KNOW it when you step through the door. If I had my way, each interior I touched would have color, a LOT of it. Piled in, mixed up and I wouldn’t feel bad about it. Color is a basic building block and I say we all ought to add a little more of it in our worlds!

Consider these ideas the next time you need to re-create or update your own space:

A: Color as your background or “neutral”. Use a bold color to fill the room where you’d normally paint it beige or white, it will serve the exact same function but with some zhuzh! Continue decorating as you normally would.

B: Color in the furniture. Maybe fuchsia walls aren’t your jam, that’s ok. How about adding color to an all-white room via furniture? Furniture and art have so much personality and you can get a lot of style points for a dramatic sofa or piece of art.

French Moderne Manor - Parade Home

I don’t know if you’ve heard, but our latest and greatest parade home will be installing in a few short months. We’ve already spent a year designing and specifying and can’t believe the time is almost here! In the coming weeks, we’ll be giving our readers an exclusive peek at the beautiful, fashion-forward home we’re designing, so keep checking back.

Let us introduce you to the house and its owners. The owners are young, cool, and willing to embrace bold design. The house began as a traditional French country estate and through the design process it evolved into something with an edgy twist. With perfect blend of old meets new, our French modern home was born.

Okay, now that we’ve all met each other, let’s jump into the design!

THE EXTERIOR

As we explored concepts for the home’s exterior, we kept coming back to photos with modern black windows – clean and minimal with skinny grids.

We took our inspiration from these photos and dropped them into our drawings. It was as if the house had slipped on its black stiletto heels. Our exterior finally had the right stylish punctuation. Check out our progress!

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

Valentine's Day is a holiday to show our love, if not for a significant other then for a friend or family member. My favorite gift idea to show my love and appreciation for another is to keep it simple, sentimental, and straight from the heart.

SIMPLE A bouquet of flowers is a Valentine's Day cliche to some but will always be one of my favorites. Mix it up with a flower arrangement like this to show how special and beautiful that someone is to you.

SENTIMENTAL Nothing says "I love you" like a beautiful piece of jewelry. Especially when taking that extra step to personalize it to make it more meaningful.

STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART Cards are always a great way to express in words exactly how you feel about someone. Keep it simple, sentimental, and speak straight from your heart, and you'll end up with the perfect gift for that special someone.

Our Favorite Paint Colors

Whenever I meet with a new client 9 times out of 10 I am asked, “well, what color would you do?”  Here is my answer, “whatever color you want.”  Why do I say that?  Well, there are millions of studies showing how color can make you feel nervous, happy, anxious, and even lose your appetite.  However, the real question is how does it make YOU feel?  Everyone sees color differently.  If you love a certain color, go for it!  Here are some colors I love:

BENJAMIN MOORE - STUNNING  I have always been drawn to navy blue.  This version is dark enough to give you the impact you want, but it isn’t so dark that it will feel black when all the lights aren’t on.

BENJAMIN MOORE - WHITE DOVE Just like a trusty ol’ friend, this white always gets the job done.  I use this on trim work and ceilings in different sheens.  It has a little bit of warmth and a little bit of cool so it is universal with any color scheme.

BENJAMIN MOORE - REVERE PEWTER  We used this color in our Salt Lake showroom.  We get inquiries about it every week.  If you are tired of white walls, but can’t push yourself to do a different color, try this one.  It is enough of a change to add some interest, but not enough to make you sick of it in a month or two.

BENJAMIN MOORE - BABY SEAL BLACK Are you a little gutsy?  Try this one!  I have always wanted a black room for the sheer drama of it.  It is strong and powerful and paired with some great art on the walls to lighten it up a little, this is the color to try out!

BENJAMIN MOORE - AMHERST GRAY Did I just push you over the edge with the thought of black walls?  Well, if you can’t handle that much saturation, but you still want something daring, this one is your color.  It can go masculine or feminine depending on the colors you add and it will still give you that little dose of drama you wanted…without going overboard.

I know we all have a room we have wanted to paint for a long time.  Well, start taping off the walls and grab a bucket or two of one of these colors and get to it!
